Author Q&A with Nicole Leiren

Hello Book Clubbers! Today, cozy mystery author Nicole Leiren stopped by to answer a couple questions for all of you as part of her blog tour for her recent cozy mystery, DEADLY DIRTY MARTINIS!!

TQBC: Cozies are one of our featured genres here on the Twenty Qs website. What sparked your interest in writing in the cozy mystery genre?

Nicole Leiren: I’ve always been a fan of mystery/suspense, etc. and still am!  However, about a year or so ago, I stumbled across a book series by Julie Hyzy that was about a chef in the White House. I fell in love!  That piqued my interest in “reading” them, but it wasn’t until my publisher approached me about contributing to the Danger Cove world that I seriously considered “writing” them. Can I say how glad I am to be a part of this world now – both as a reader AND as an author? The cozy community and fans are amazing!!

I enjoy the genre as it gets back to the origin of the “whodunit” and does so without on-screen violence, etc. It’s truly about the mystery.

TQBC: What do you find the easiest about writing cozies?

Nicole: As for the “easy” part about writing them, well…I’m not sure there is.  If I had to pick, I would say that once your location is created, it becomes easier to write about it and make it a living/breathing part of the story. Small towns play a big role in cozy mysteries so letting that town be a part of the story is part of the fun.

TQBC: What about the most difficult thing?

Nicole: The difficult part is making sure you give readers a great mystery that they can’t figure out too soon! No one wants to know by chapter 8 who the killer is – so plotting and putting the clues in just the right places is key.

Nicole, thank you so much for visiting! Book Clubbers, Nicole did other Q&As for the tour and other hosts did reviews too. You can see the full schedule and follow along on the Karan & Co. Author Solutions tour page! Go read those posts as well, but not before you purchase DEADLY DIRTY MARTINIS!

Lilly Waters is loving life as the new assistant manager at the Smugglers’ Tavern in the small town of Danger Cove. So the last thing she wants or expects is an impromptu family reunion with the wannabe-rock star dad and his number-one-fan (her mother) who were noticeably absent from her childhood. Not only does Lilly have her hands full dealing with Mom and Dad who act more like teenagers than parents, but she also finds herself in hot water when the son of a Chicago mob boss is murdered on tavern property. Now Lilly's mom is the number one suspect, and Lilly isn't sure where her loyalties lie.

The search for answers leads Lilly down a dangerous path where she uncovers more suspects than she can say Thanksgiving grace over—including a tattooed trouble maker, a gambler who turned against the mob, and even her own father! All their motivations prove dirtier than her signature martinis, and if Lilly doesn't get to the truth soon, not only will dinner be ruined, but the killer may serve her up on a silver platter.
